WHEELING — A full slate of activities is on tap this weekend at Oglebay, where park officials are preparing to send summer out with a bang and make way for fall.

A three-day holiday weekend will bring activities for the entire family to Oglebay Park this Friday through Monday, Sept. 2-5. Highlights include live entertainment, inflatables and activities for children, Revolutionary War reenactments, the annual woodcarvers’ show, a skydiving performance and much more.

Fort Henry Days returns to the park this weekend, as does the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra’s popular Music Under the Stars, which wraps up Oglebay’s Sunday Funday Summer Concert Series, but kicks off the 2022-23 WSO concert season.

“We have so much going on at the park,” said Herb Faulkenberry, vice president of sales and marketing at Oglebay. “History buffs will enjoy the battlefield reenactment by Fort Henry Living History, thrill-seeking guests will witness an exciting skydiving performance by Americana, artists will appreciate the Oglebay Woodcarvers Guild Woodcarver’s Show, kids will love the foam party and inflatables, music lovers will listen to live entertainment all weekend including the annual Music Under the Stars performance — presented by the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra and Kalkreuth Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. — and of course, fireworks.”

Oglebay officials noted that so far, the weather forecast looks very promising for those looking forward to visiting the park to take part in the myriad of fun events and activities for the holiday weekend.

“What a great time to get out and enjoy the last blast of summer here at Oglebay,” Faulkenberry said.

Fort Henry Days, presented by Fort Henry Living History, will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Visitors can explore an 18th-century living-history encampment showcasing colonial and Native-American cultures located at Levenson Shelter and Camp Russel areas. A battle re-enactment of the siege of Fort Henry with young Betty Zane’s heroic run for gunpowder will take place at 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The annual Woodcarvers Show, presented by the Oglebay Woodcarvers Guild, will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday in Ogelbay’s Pine Room. Visitors will be able to check out the work of talented woodcarvers from across the country, as they come together for the annual event to showcase their artistic creations. The show features carvings of all types, with most offered for sale.

A special treat for park patrons will have everyone looking skyward at 7 p.m. Saturday, when the Americana skydiving performance unfolds over Schenk Lake. The exciting skydiving demonstration will drop out of the sky from 12,000 feet above.

This year’s Music Under the Stars performance Sunday night at the Anne Kuchinka Amphitheater will feature the WSO and special guest Jeans n’ Classics. This symphonic and classic rock collaboration returns to celebrate one of the greatest albums from the Beatles — “Abbey Road.” Presented by the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra and Kalkreuth Roofing and Sheet Metal Inc., this special performance is free for everyone to enjoy during one last WSO show under the stars this summer. Donations will be accepted at the show, which begins a 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

After dusk following the conclusion of the WSO performance, Oglebay’s annual Labor Day fireworks extravaganza will light up the sky.

Oglebay’s season-ending swim with pet owners and their dogs — Drool at the Pool — will return the following weekend on Sept. 10. But this weekend, both the Oglebay and Wheeling Park swimming pools will be open for the last regular hours of the season. Both pools will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday through Monday.

There will be live music from 6-9 p.m. at Oglebay’s Route 88 BBQ & Brew and from 8-11 p.m. at the Wilson Lodge Lakeview Patio on Friday and Saturday. The family-friendly foam party will take place from 5-7 p.m. at Schenk Lake, where there will be an inflatable fun zone from 2-7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

“There is something for absolutely everyone to enjoy at Oglebay this weekend,” Bob Peckenpaugh, president and CEO of the Wheeling Park Commission, said. “We invite you to come up and spend time having fun and taking advantage of the gorgeous weather we anticipate in the park.”
