The hollow-bodied, player’s distance iron has become a fast growing area within the iron marketplaces that looks to provide golfers with something that offers the looks of a Tour caliber iron—thin topline, reduced offset—with a little more performance under the hood than what a comparable forged muscle or cavity back would provide.

To help provide a more solid feeling, manufacturers have come up with various designs that largely revolve around some anti-vibration filling to compensate for the gap between the hollow body and face.

Cobra’s 2022 iteration of the KING Forged Tec and KING Forged Tec X are their 4th generation of the series and may be the best looking one.

Before diving under the covers of the new Forged Tec / Forged Tec X, I think we really need to stop and appreciate how good this iron looks. The “player’s distance” iron is something where looks are part of the puzzle, and Cobra truly hit this on the mark.

But what’s on the inside matters, arguably, much more.  Indeed, there are many established in this category, so the Forged Tec / Forged Tec X need to do something different or better than everyone else.

Starting with the body, the Forged Tec starts life as a piece of 1025 carbon steel—a common softer feeling but more durable steel commonly used in forged irons—and go through a a 5-step forging process to create the body and face.  Instead, the Forged Tec X is a cast body combined with a forged face.  From there, both go through a similar construction process by combining the body and face with tungsten weighting and a foam insert.

While the common marketing line reappears here again—more forgiveness, better ball speeds, and distance—some early, independent testing has shown that Cobra’s Forged Tec / Forged Tec X are providing measurable performance gains over its marketplace competitors.

The bottom line is simple:  as of right now, Cobra has the newest player’s distance and player improvement irons on the marketplace.

If you’re a golfer looking to upgrade your scoring clubs, the Cobra’s should be part of the short list to make sure you’re not missing out on the one packing the most current technological improvements.
